Curated Marketplace Web Application
United Kingdom
About The Project
Folksy is a UK marketplace for handmade and designer-made products created by independent British makers. Every product listed on the platform is made, designed, or hand-printed by the seller, which keeps the focus on authentic craft rather than mass-produced goods.
The platform needed to support a growing community of makers and a large and expanding product catalog. The main goal was to keep the buying experience simple while giving sellers practical tools to run their shops. Buyers needed an easy way to browse, search, and purchase products, while makers needed a clear system to manage listings, orders, and payments.
We built both the buyer-facing marketplace and the seller-side tools as part of a single platform. Buyers can explore categories, view shop pages, and complete purchases through a smooth checkout process. Sellers can manage their entire business from one dashboard.

Major Project Challenges
The main challenge was maintaining authenticity as the marketplace grew. Every listing genuinely met the platform’s strict criteria for handmade, designed, or hand-printed crafts as the catalog scaled. As the number of listings increased, it became harder to maintain this standard. We needed proper workflows to review new shops and check listings without slowing platform growth.
Another challenge was building tools that work for independent makers. Most sellers are not technical users and do not run full-time online stores. The system had to remain simple enough for daily use while still supporting real business needs such as order tracking, payouts, and inventory updates. Balancing simplicity with functionality required careful design across the seller dashboard.
The platform also needed to maintain a consistent identity. To maintain a calm and clean brand identity, the team deliberately made design decisions that prioritized immersive browsing and discovery over high-pressure, quick transactions.
Solutions & Impact
We rebuilt the platform using ASP.NET MVC with a clear, modular structure. Buyer-facing features and seller tools were separated but kept consistent, making the platform easier to manage and maintain. The catalog, search, and shop pages were designed for simple browsing, allowing buyers to explore products without feeling rushed or overwhelmed.
For makers, we focused on tools that fit their daily workflows. Listing new products, managing orders, and tracking payouts were made fast and straightforward. The dashboard highlights what matters most, such as new orders, customer messages, and low-stock items, without adding unnecessary complexity. This streamlined dashboard allows makers to spend more time on their craft rather than on managing the platform.
We added moderation and review tools to help the team maintain listing quality. New shop applications, flagged listings, and other edge cases follow clear workflows to keep the marketplace authentic as it grows.
The visual design uses clean spacing, simple typography, and large, clear images. It gives buyers a calm, professional experience and helps them appreciate the craftsmanship of each product. Overall, the platform now supports thousands of makers, offers a smooth shopping experience, and is easy to expand with new features.
