Drupal Development, DevOps Migration
United Kingdom
About The Project
Water UK manages digital resources, industry information, policy publications, public awareness campaigns, and regulatory updates for water and wastewater service providers across the United Kingdom. Their Drupal platform acts as a central hub for consumers, industry stakeholders, government bodies, regulators, developers, and supply chain partners.
The platform needed to support large volumes of structured content while ensuring strong usability, accessibility, and discoverability across multiple audience groups. Also, the existing infrastructure limited deployment flexibility and required manual effort for releases and environment management.
They approached us to improve both the Drupal platform and the underlying infrastructure. The goal was to create a scalable, content-driven system with improved editorial control, better performance, and automated deployments.
Key Project Deliverables
We delivered improvements across content management, user experience, and infrastructure automation.
Content Management Platform
Built a structured Drupal content system to manage large volumes of industry and regulatory information efficiently.
Public Information Portal
Developed consumer and stakeholder-facing sections for education, campaigns, guidance, and regulatory updates.
Search & Discovery
Implemented structured categorization and navigation to improve content discoverability across all audience groups.
Infrastructure Migration
Migrated the Drupal platform from Platform.sh to a dedicated Plesk hosting environment.
CI/CD Automation
Implemented GitHub Actions workflows to automate testing, validation, and deployments.
Automated Deployments
Configured Git-based deployment workflows that automatically deploy code updates across environments.
Deployment Validation
Added automated checks to verify dependencies and deployment readiness before releases.
Build Automation
Automated Composer installation, frontend builds, and deployment build processes.
Performance Improvements
Configured Redis caching, Solr search integration, and optimized PHP settings for better performance.
Major Project Challenges
The platform needed to manage a high volume of content, including news, reports, technical standards, policy updates, and campaign materials, while keeping it structured and easy to navigate.
It also served multiple audiences, including consumers, developers, regulators, and industry professionals, each with different content journeys and access patterns.
On the infrastructure side, the existing Platform.sh setup limited flexibility and required manual deployment steps. Migrating to a dedicated environment needed to be done without disrupting the live system.
Ensuring consistent editorial workflows, accessibility compliance, and long-term scalability was also a key requirement for future growth.
Solutions & Impact
We delivered a unified Drupal platform and modern DevOps workflow to improve both content operations and infrastructure management.
- Implemented structured and reusable content architecture.
- Improved editorial workflows and governance.
- Enhanced navigation and content discovery experience.
- Migrated infrastructure from Platform.sh to Plesk.
- Built CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions.
- Automated deployments and validation processes.
- Configured Redis caching and Solr search.
- Automated Composer and build processes.
- Optimized PHP performance and deployment monitoring.
The result was a more flexible and scalable Drupal ecosystem with faster deployments, reduced manual effort, and improved content management efficiency. Water UK now has a unified platform for publishing industry updates, public resources, and regulatory information with greater operational control.
